BEEDIE PROFESSOR APPOINTED TO KING'S COUNSEL

While the world observed the coronation of King Charles III this past weekend, the SFU community celebrated Shafik Bhalloo, who was bestowed upon the King's counsel (KC) designation. KC recognizes lawyers for their outstanding service, exceptional merit and contributions to the legal profession and the community. Only seven per cent of practising BC lawyers can be appointed as King's counsel.

Bhalloo has been an invaluable member of the SFU Beedie Community for more than ten years. His tireless efforts and unwavering passion for teaching have left an indelible impact on students, colleagues and the wider business community.

 

BILL REID CENTRE EXHIBIT CELEBRATES NAMESAKE AT BURNABY CAMPUS

Tucked into a cozy nook along the bustling main artery of Saywell Hall, the Bill Reid Centre (BRC) display space has hosted several exhibits that highlight new media approaches for engaging with, and learning about, the visual and material heritage of Coastal First Peoples.

The new art exhibit on the Burnaby campus observes the extraordinary life and legacy of the Centre’s namesake, Bill Reid (1920-1998).

 

HIMCHAN JEONG INSPIRES THE NEXT GENERATION OF ACTUARIES

Himchan Jeong joined SFU as an assistant professor in the Department for Statistics and Actuarial Sciences in 2020. He takes pride in being one of the faculty members that guide and educate future actuaries in BC. He also discusses his motivations behind pursuing science, personal challenges faced and his experience with inclusivity throughout his journey.

 

SFU AND MITACS 'GREENLIGHT' RESEARCH ON HYDROGEN TECHNOLOGY

SFU professor Erik Kjeang leads research on hydrogen fuel cells in partnership with Burnaby-based Greenlight Innovation. With support from Mitacs and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, the project receives funding for student interns and testing resources. The joint application was complex and this funding provides additional opportunities and resources to strengthen the collaboration and dive deeper into the project.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS WEEK | MAY 7 - 13

Emergency Preparedness Week is a national awareness initiative supported by Public Safety Canada. This week, SFU Emergency Management brings you the top ways that you can be prepared in the event of an emergency, whether at work, school or at home.

 

CONVOCATION ASSISTANCE NEEDED | JUNE 6 - 9

Spring Convocation will happen Tuesday, June 6 to Friday, June 9. There are eight ceremonies (two per day) and you can select your available times when you register.

 

REMINDER - ASSOCIATE VICE-PRESIDENT, LEARNING AND TEACHING SEARCH CALL FOR APPLICATIONS OPEN UNTIL MAY 12

The search for SFU's next vice-provost and associate vice-president, learning and teaching (AVPLT), is open for applications until May 12. You can find the complete search schedule as well as the position description and candidate profile on the Provost and VPA website.

If you know of qualified internal candidates who may be interested, please encourage them to apply. Applications should be addressed to the Chair of the Search Committee, Dr. Wade Parkhouse, Provost and Vice-President Academic, pro tem, and sent to vpasrch@sfu.ca by 2 p.m on Friday, May 12.

SFU BURNABY CAMPUS CONSTRUCTION NOTICE

On Saturday May 13, South Sciences Building will be closed for maintenance of the HVAC system between 7:00 a.m and 7:00 p.m. Lab users are advised that all chemicals in fume hoods must be capped off and removed to another appropriate storage. DRUM FOR MOOSE HIDE CAMPAIGN DAY

Join the SFU community to raise awareness about the ongoing impacts of gender-based violence in our communities and the path to wellness and healing. Staff, faculty and students are invited to take part and drum in solidarity. Coffee, tea and bannock will be served. 

 

INTRODUCING THE NEW 'TECH FOR TEACHING' SERIES

Are you interested in learning how to design your Canvas course shell in ways that save you time and better support your students? Are you searching for easy-to-use educational media tools that you can use to make engaging digital content?

'Tech for Teaching' is a new series of quick, online workshops. These will help you set up your in-person, online or hybrid courses in manners that aid in meeting your learning and teaching goals more effectively and efficiently.

The first session of this series happens on May 10, 'Introduction to Teaching in Canvas'. You will learn how to create your own Canvas shell or sandbox, set up modules, creating your home page, upload graphics and embed media.

 

INDIGENOUS STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF COMMUNITY CIRCLE

Indigenous students, faculty and staff are invited to a gathering hosted by the President, the Provost and Vice-President Academic pro tem and the Vice-President People, Equity and Inclusion.

At the event, Chris Lewis, Director, Indigenous Initiatives and Reconciliation will share updates on a proposed Indigenous university governance structure. This is a free event for Indigenous community members to connect with each other, shape new roles to increase Indigenous participation and decision-making at all levels of the university and enjoy a delicious lunch catered by Salishan Catering.

 

FOOD INSECURITY IN ASIAN COMMUNITIES: COMMUNITY-LED INITIATIVES AND ACTIONS

May 12 | Hosted by BC Centre for Disease Control and SFU Faculty of Health Sciences

This virtual event will be led by frontline community leaders who are taking action to address food insecurity in Asian and other communities in the Lower Mainland. The co-hosted event is part of a series of events celebrating Asian Heritage Month.
