Kai-Uwe Schmidt’s research is in the combinatorics of information transmission, especially the merit factor of binary sequences, power control for multicarrier communications, and codes over rings. His paper on the merit factor of appended m-sequences won the Best Paper Award of the Sequences and their Applicationsconference in 2010. He had published 14 journal and conference papers, with a further two accepted and two submitted. His nominators describe “an outstanding researcher of remarkable potential” who has “demonstrated depth, breadth, tenacity, and inventiveness” and has “made significant and lasting mathematical contributions”.
