A study led by mathematics Professor John Stockie that uncovered new evidence on how maple trees produce sap, was recently featured in The Peak. Stockie, along with colleagues Isabell Graf and Maurizio Ceseri were curious why some maple trees over the winter produced more amounts of sap than others. They designed a mathematical model to discover what specific mechanisms at the cellular level were essential components in tree sap secretion, identifying three key components. Their findings could have important implications for maple syrup producers.
