A Taste of Pi - On Display

December 16, 2015

A program for high school students that is organized by faculty members from the Department of Mathematics was showcased at the Science Expo BC: Endeavour Conference Exhibition.

A Taste of Pi , coordinated by Dr. Malgorzata Dubiel and Dr. Veselin Jungic, gives high school students in grades 10 and 11 the opportunity to attend presentations by academics who discuss their research, provide developments in the field, and talk about contemporary applications of mathematics. Following the lectures the students put what they had just learned into practice, through a series of real life activities.

Dr. Jungic and Melanie Oldham, a recent SFU graduate and former participant of the program, hosted an information table at the conference and provided a demonstration to a group of over 50 student conference attendees.

"The main goal of A Taste of Pi is to introduce and promote contemporary mathematics to high school students interested in the subject" said Dr. Jungic.

The program is supported by the Department of Mathematics, the Faculty of Science, PIMS, and the IRMACS Centre.
