My mathematics degree from SFU laid the foundation for my future career.
The professors at SFU are uniquely approachable. Not only are they
willing to lend a hand to struggling students, but they go out of their
way to make you aware of potential opportunities to develop your skills
outside the classroom. One of SFU's strengths is in computational math,
and the computer skills I've picked up during my time here have been
immensely helpful in my research (and they look great on a CV!).
There are many opportunities for students to participate in research at
SFU. My NSERC-USRA exposed me to the field of bioinformatics, which I
later persued in a co-op position and as a research assistant. I am now
starting my Master's degree in bioinformatics, and can honestly say I
have found my passion. When I started my degree, I never dreamed I would
end up working in the intersection of biology, math, and computer
science, but the theoretical foundations you can gain by studying math
can be transferred to a wide range of applications.
