Internal Transfer Requirements
The internal transfer requirements on this page are designed to give students an indication of what is required to join our programs. Satisfying them does not guarantee admission as requirements may change slightly each term.
Please view your program of interest below. If you satisfy the requirements, follow the instructions on "How to Apply" at the bottom of the page. If unsure of your eligibility, please discuss with the undergraduate advisor.
Mathematics Major or Applied Mathematics Major
Course requirements for Mathematics and Applied Mathematics programs are shown here.
There are two possible options for admission: standard admission or early admission. You must satisfy one of these two categories shown below.
Standard Admission Requirements
To declare a Mathematics or Applied Mathematics major program through the standard admission category, students must satisfy all of the items below.
- Students complete all the required lower division courses with an average of C = 2.00 GPA;
- Students achieve at least a C- grade in MATH 242 and MACM 201;
- Students must not achieve lower than the required grade in any of the program courses;
- Students have at least 2 repeats remaining; and
- Students are on good academic standing. If they have taken upper division courses, both their
cumulative and program upper division GPA must be at least 2.0.
Early Admission Requirements
If students achieve strong grades in first attempts of lower division program requirements taken at SFU, they may be eligible for admission before completing all lower division requirements. To be eligible for this category, students must satisfy items 3 - 5 of the standard admission requirements above as well as the requirements below.
Students must achieve a C = 2.0 GPA average in the lower division requirements taken to date. If MACM 201 or MATH 242 have been taken, minimum C- grades are required in each. Students must also achieve one of the following:
- Students achieve a B grade or better in any 3 required lower division MATH*/MACM courses; or
- Students achieve a grade of A or A+ in any required lower division MATH* course.
* MATH 154/155/157/158 can be counted toward program requirements (if the grades are high enough). However, they are excluded for the purpose of early admission assessment.
Requirements for Non-Science Students
If students are not currently in the Faculty of Science, they must satisfy the Faculty of Science internal transfer requirements as well as the Department of Mathematics internal transfer requirements.
Mathematics and Computing Science (MACM) Joint Major
Course requirements for the Mathematics and Computing Science joint program are shown here.
There are two possible options for admission: standard admission or early admission. You must satisfy one of these two categories shown below.
Standard Admission Requirements
To declare the Mathematics and Computing Science (MACM) joint major program, students must satisfy all of the items below.
- Students complete all the required lower division courses with an average of C = 2.00 GPA;
- Students achieve at least a C- grade in MATH 242 and MACM 201;
- Students must not achieve lower than the required grade in any of the program courses;

- Students achieve a B grade or better in any 3 required lower division MATH*/MACM courses and in any 2 required lower division CMPT** courses; or
- Students achieve a grade of A or A+ in any required lower division MATH* course and a grade of A or A+ in any required lower division CMPT course**.
* MATH 154/155/157/158 can be counted toward program requirements (if the grades are high enough). However, they are excluded for the purpose of early admission assessment.
**CMPT 125/127 are considered 1 course for the purpose of early admission assessment.
Requirements for Non-Science Students
If students are not currently in the Faculty of Science, they must satisfy the Faculty of Science internal transfer requirements as well as the Department of Mathematics internal transfer requirements.
Operations Research Major
Course requirements for the Operations Research program are shown here.
There are two possible options for admission: standard admission or early admission. You must satisfy one of these two categories shown below.
Standard Admission Requirements
To declare an Operations Research major program through the standard admission category, students must satisfy all of the items below.
- Students complete all the required lower division courses with an average of C = 2.00 GPA;
- Students achieve at least a C- grade in MATH 208W and MACM 201;
- Students must not achieve lower than the required grade in any of the program courses;
- Students have at least 2 repeats remaining; and
- Students are on good academic standing. If they have taken upper division courses, both their
cumulative and program upper division GPA must be at least 2.0.

Mathematics Minor
Course requirements for the Mathematics minor program are shown here.
There are two possible options for admission: standard admission or early admission. You must satisfy one of these two categories shown below.
Standard Admission Requirements
To declare a Mathematics minor program through the standard admission category, students must satisfy all of the items below.

- Students finish lower division program requirements with a 3.0 program and cumulative GPA.
- If students have taken upper division courses, both the upper division program and cumulative GPAs must also be 3.0.
How to apply
Students should visit the undergraduate advisor during drop-in advising (with their student ID cards) to request a program transfer. Alternatively, students can email math_advice@sfu.ca to request a program transfer. Emails must be sent from SFU accounts and include the following:
- Full legal name
- Student number
- Computing ID
- Program you want to declare (join)
- Program you want to discontinue (remove)
Complete applications normally require 2 - 4 weeks to assess and process. Updates are sent by email.
