CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

The Doctoral Seminar A initiates students in the development of an ongoing writing portfolio, writing SSHRC applications, ethics protocols and theses proposals. This provides a forum for second year students to present their theses proposals. Portfolios will be presented during the term. This course is graded on an in progress/complete basis.

COURSE DETAILS:

This course will be held on the following nights:
September 14, October 12, November 2, and November 30. This course will continue in the Spring semester.



The LCL Doctoral Seminar provides a scholarly home for students enrolled in the Languages, Cultures and Literacies PhD program. We address topics and issues of interest to students, with the goals to support your academic growth and progress in your doctoral studies, create a scholarly community and navigate academic culture. Activities are oriented to developing the academic CV and may include scholarships and grants, conference proposals and participation, comprehensive exams, cultivating a writing practice, and other issues according to student need and interest. This is required course for all students enrolled in the LCL Doctoral Program. 3rd year students who enrolled in 927 in Fall 2015 can register to audit.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

To provide a scholarly community during students’ doctoral studies;
To support and mentor students in academic cultures;
To provide a scholarly venue for the development of academic writing oriented to academic progress and advancement;
To encourage and mentor participation in academic activities.

Grading

  • Participation 10%
  • Academic activity/event participation 30%
  • Portfolio 1 30%
  • Portfolio 2 30%

NOTES:

This course requires of students to attend academic events away from SFU campus. There are no known risks to this activity and a field trip orientation will be provided in class. 

This course is graded on a PASS/FAIL basis

REQUIREMENTS:

There are no required textbooks for this course. Articles and course resources will be posted on the course Canvas site.
