Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Students will build on their study of Imaginative Education (IE) from previous terms in the context of assessment and evaluation. This course will focus on appropriate means to assess and evaluate student learning within an IE cognitive-tools approach. Students will explore theoretical and practical dimensions of assessment in general and will critically examine (In theory and through reflective practice) how assessment/evaluation may be applied within an imaginative learning context.

COURSE DETAILS:

Meeting Dates:
Asynchronous online throughout the 2018 Summer Term.

Course Description:
Effective assessment is crucial to effective curriculum design and instruction because what we believe about and how we practice assessment and evaluation influence how we design and implement learning activities for students. If teachers are unaware of their assessment and evaluation beliefs and practices, their assumptions about assessment and evaluation can influence their teaching in ways that are neither intended nor ideal. In other words, greater consciousness about assessment and evaluation leads to more effective teaching and learning. This is as true for imaginative educators as it is for teachers who adopt other educational approaches.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

In this course, students will have opportunities to gain greater consciousness about their assessment beliefs and practices, and how those beliefs and practices relate to their work as imaginative educators. Specifically, in this course, students will:

  • apply assessment and evaluation practices that align with Imaginative Education (IE) principles;
  • explore assessment and evaluation practices using an IE framework;
  • articulate past and present experiences of and beliefs about assessment; and
  • design, implement and evaluate assessment practices based on an IE framework.

SFU’s Academic Integrity web site http://students.sfu.ca/academicintegrity.html is filled with information on what is meant by academic dishonesty, where you can find resources to help with your studies and the consequences of cheating.  Check out the site for more information and videos that help explain the issues in plain English.

Each student is responsible for his or her conduct as it affects the University community.  Academic dishonesty, in whatever form, is ultimately destructive of the values of the University. Furthermore, it is unfair and discouraging to the majority of students who pursue their studies honestly. Scholarly integrity is required of all members of the University. http://www.sfu.ca/policies/gazette/student/s10-01.html
