Description

COURSE DETAILS:

This course provides an overview of initiatives connecting education and neurofeedback with an introduction to potentially foundational new areas of educational research, incorporating state-of-the-art mixed research methods that include electroencephalography, eye-tracking, multiple video streams, screen capture, etc. It will introduce new perspectives to areas of educational research concerned with cognition, affect, and guided meditation. The course has no prerequisites aside from being concurrently enrolled in any graduate program, but is aimed mainly toward graduate students in all areas of education, at both the masters and doctoral levels.

Grading

  • Five 1-page Discussion Papers 50%
  • Term Paper or (optionally) a Term Project 50%

NOTES:

Students will be expected to engage in reading and discussing 30 to 50 pages of primary and/or secondary literature per week. Readings will be drawn from, but not restricted to, listed references. Individual and group exploration, research, and exegesis of various threads of thought germane to the focus of this course will be strongly encouraged.

Each discussion paper (250 words maximum) is based on assigned and optional readings specifically of interest to the student. Students will identify and articulate an issue that they found to be particularly interesting and/or important. They will also clearly and concisely explain why they found this issue of interest and/or importance. Students will then present and discuss their papers with others. The term paper will be 3000-5000 words on a topic of interest pertaining to the course that is of particular interest to the student. Depending on individual students’ interests and at their option in negotiation with the instructor, any student may forego a term paper in lieu of a term project that will enable them to gain first-hand laboratory experience with neurofeedback, guided mediation, and new
methods of educational neuroscience.

Provided in class, in accord with main topics in tandem with the specific
interests of each student. Bibliography provided by instructor.
