CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:
Advanced study of selected works belonging to a literary genre (novel, theatre, poetry, etc). May be organized by author, period, movement, theme or approach. Students with credit for FREN 472, 474 or 475 must seek permission of the Department to take this course for further credit.
COURSE DETAILS:
Le roman est un genre littéraire éclectique propice à la critique sociale. Le cours Le roman au féminin est une étude avancée sur le genre romanesque et s’organise autour de la thématique du féminin. Dans le cadre du cours, nous verrons différents procédés littéraires déployés par des écrivaines dans la période contemporaine afin d’acquérir une place de choix dans le genre romanesque : de l’ironie au réalisme magique en passant par l’écriture migrante, leurs démarches sont nombreuses. Tout en nous référant à diverses études théoriques, nous approfondirons l’écriture de trois romancières (Nelly Arcan, Kim Thúy et Ying Chen) et nous regarderons les moyens littéraires qu’elles utilisent pour élaborer une critique féministe. La première partie du cours sera organisée autour du roman Folle de Nelly Arcan. Nous analyserons, entre autres, l’ironie, l’humour noir et la récupération d’injures faites aux femmes. Lors de la seconde partie du cours, nous nous consacrerons au roman Mãn de Kim Thúy et nous parlerons de l’écriture migrante, de l’intertextualité et de bien d’autres éléments propres à l’auteure. La dernière partie du cours se centrera sur le roman Espèces de Ying Chen. Nous tenterons de comprendre le réalisme magique au féminin et la signification de la figure de la chatte dans le roman.
