Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Polyfunctional organic compounds and complex organic reactions. Introduction to natural products. Students with credit for CHEM 283 may not take this course for further credit. Quantitative.

COURSE DETAILS:

3 lecture hours/week; 1 tutorial hour/week (for 8 weeks, there are no tutorials in Week 1)

  • Aromatic Substitution Reactions
  • Carbonyl Chemistry
  • Carboxylic Acids
  • Acyl Compounds
  • Biological Molecules
  • Carbohydrates

Grading

  • Term Examination 1 40%
  • Term Examination 2 60%

NOTES:

The final exam is cumulative. A mark of less than 30% in the final exam will result in a grade of F.

RECOMMENDED READING:

Bruice, P.Y., Organic Chemistry. Editions 5-7 are suitable. Publisher: Prentice Hall.

Any other standard introductory organic chemistry textbook will be suitable.
