CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

An interdisciplinary study of the social and cultural construction of gender, and how ideas about masculinity and feminity shape current issues, knowledge, popular culture, and social policy. Students who have completed WS 101 may not take GSWS 101 for further credit. Breadth-Social Sciences.

COURSE DETAILS:

An interdisciplinary examination of the work, status, and lives of Canadian women, the social and cultural construction of gender, and the ways ideas about gender shape systems of knowledge, social institutions, and social policy. Students will examine interconnections of gender with race, ethnicity, class, and sexuality, address how women's lives and identities are shaped by the intersection of oppression and privilege, and discuss the history and future of feminist activism. Students will develop critical and analytical skills by investigating popular stereotypes and assumptions about sexual difference and their effects within social institutions such as law, politics, work, religion, media, and the family. As well, students will analyze how the lives of women have been shaped by individual and institutional power relations. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: YOUR WORK, YOUR SUCCESS

SFU’s Academic Integrity web site http://www.sfu.ca/students/academicintegrity.html is filled with information on what is meant by academic dishonesty, where you can find resources to help with your studies and the consequences of cheating.  Check out the site for more information and videos that help explain the issues in plain English.

Each student is responsible for his or her conduct as it affects the University community.  Academic dishonesty, in whatever form, is ultimately destructive of the values of the University. Furthermore, it is unfair and discouraging to the majority of students who pursue their studies honestly. Scholarly integrity is required of all members of the University. http://www.sfu.ca/policies/gazette/student/s10-01.html
