CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to provide the student with the means of acquiring basic spoken fluency and reading facility.
COURSE DETAILS:
PLEASE NOTE: This course has some asynchronous work that students must complete in their own time. Students must also enroll in a lab section (D101, D102 or D103) that meets synchronously once a week remotely during a set scheduled class time, for which students are expected to be available.

Welcome to ITALIAN 100! BENVENUTI! This course is for you if you wish to learn a new language, to communicate in Italian with
simple and useful sentences, fall in love with the Italian culture and language. You will learn “la bella lingua”, the beautiful language in a fun and interactive online class atmosphere.
This course is for beginners and focuses on developing basic language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) in Italian.
Elements of grammar, syntax, vocabulary and idiomatic expressions as well as aspects of Italian customs and culture will be taught in the context of everyday dialogues and texts. Accurate pronunciation and clear sentence patterns will be stressed. Students will be exposed to authentic Italian material and will have the opportunity to practice their listening and speaking skills during the online meeting and during their asynchronous practice. Regular attendance and preparation for each meeting’s activities and group work is expected.
STUDENT SUITABILITY FOR THIS COURSE
ITAL 100 is designed for students with no (or very little) previous knowledge of Italian. Students whose first language is Italian, or those who received their secondary education in an Italian-speaking community may not be admitted to this course. Students who have had some initial training in Italian should consult with the instructor regarding placement at the appropriate level: ecaselli@sfu.ca
COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:
- To provide the students with the ability to speak Italian well enough to describe and ask/answer questions in the present and past tense about a variety of topics related to your personal introduction and description, give and ask for information, express preferences, speak about your hobbies and habits, telling time, discuss about food, give and ask information in the past tense.
- To allow students to develop vocabulary applicable to a variety of cultural context and everyday life.
- To develop the capacity to write sentences and short paragraphs on familiar topics relating to personal interests and practical needs.
- To begin to develop an awareness and appreciation for Italian Culture and Language in a fun and engaging online class environment.

TEACHING AT SFU IN SPRING 2021
Teaching at SFU in spring 2021 will be conducted primarily through remote methods. There will be in-person course components in a few exceptional cases where this is fundamental to the educational goals of the course. Such course components will be clearly identified at registration, as will course components that will be “live” (synchronous) vs. at your own pace (asynchronous). Enrollment acknowledges that remote study may entail different modes of learning, interaction with your instructor, and ways of getting feedback on your work than may be the case for in-person classes. To ensure you can access all course materials, we recommend you have access to a computer with a microphone and camera, and the internet. In some cases your instructor may use Zoom or other means requiring a camera and microphone to invigilate exams. If proctoring software will be used, this will be confirmed in the first week of class.
