Description
CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:
Directed readings for upper level students who desire to study selected topics in depth.
COURSE DETAILS:
PROCEDURE FOR REGISTRATION:
1. The initiative for a Directed Study course comes from the student.
2. The student identifies a member of the faculty who has expertise in the area of the proposed study and receives preliminary approval for their supervision.
3. The student submits an initial proposal to the Faculty member and then discusses the proposal to confirm the academic quality of the Directed Study.
4. The student and the faculty member reach agreement and together draft a final proposal, which must include the faculty supervisor's signature. (see form at link below)
5. The student submits the signed proposal to the Departmental Assistant for Department approval. Proposals will be accepted one month before the start of the semester and up to the end of the second week of classes in the relevant semester. No late proposals will be considered.
6. Upon approval, the student will be registered for the Directed Study course by the Departmental Assistant.

Once you have secured faculty sponsorship, please submit the completed form signed by yourself and the instructor to the Advising Office for Chair approval and processing.

TEACHING AT SFU IN SUMMER 2021
Teaching at SFU in summer 2021 will be conducted primarily through remote methods, but we will continue to have in-person experiential activities for a selection of courses. Such course components will be clearly identified at registration, as will course components that will be “live” (synchronous) vs. at your own pace (asynchronous). Enrollment acknowledges that remote study may entail different modes of learning, interaction with your instructor, and ways of getting feedback on your work than may be the case for in-person classes. To ensure you can access all course materials, we recommend you have access to a computer with a microphone and camera, and the internet. In some cases your instructor may use Zoom or other means requiring a camera and microphone to invigilate exams. If proctoring software will be used, this will be confirmed in the first week of class.
