Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Methods of field navigation, geological mapping and the interpretation of geological field data including cross sections, the geological time scale, and stratigraphic sections and columns. Includes two weekend field trips. Field locations may vary from year to year. All lectures and field trips are mandatory.

COURSE DETAILS:

In Field Geology 1, students will learn basic field methods such as taking notes, reading maps, characterizing exposures of rocks and sediments, interpreting textures and structures, and field safety.

Course dates: April 30-May 8, 2021

Classrooms: TASC1 7005 and 7011

Attendance at all lectures and exercises is mandatory.  Lectures, exercises and assignments will be done (1) in the classroom, (2) on Burnaby Mountain, and (3) on day-trips to field sites in the Lower Mainland. The dates for the field excursions will be determined later; they will be based, in part, on the weather forecast.

Grading

  • The grade will be based on in-class assignments, field performance and professional conduct, and a final exam. 100%

NOTES:

Students will need to walk on hilly, uneven ground for a kilometre or more. Students who anticipate difficulty with this level of activity should contact the instructor immediately. Students will need to sign safety and risk forms.

Students will need to follow all regulations and procedures regarding COVID-19.

Supplementary Fee: $35.00.

Materials

MATERIALS + SUPPLIES:

Some equipment will be provided (notebooks with paper; compasses; other geological equipment).

 The following items are required:

Stationary: Pens, pencils, coloured pencils (8 minimum), clipboard and 8.5x11 inch paper.

Outdoor clothing: light hiking boots; day pack; loose-fitting, warm clothing; raincoat and pants; hat with brim; gloves; toque.

Personal items: sun-block; lip balm; sunglasses; medicine or equipment related to known health conditions

TEACHING AT SFU IN SUMMER 2021

Teaching at SFU in summer 2021 will be conducted primarily through remote methods, but we will continue to have in-person experiential activities for a selection of courses.  Such course components will be clearly identified at registration, as will course components that will be “live” (synchronous) vs. at your own pace (asynchronous). Enrollment acknowledges that remote study may entail different modes of learning, interaction with your instructor, and ways of getting feedback on your work than may be the case for in-person classes. To ensure you can access all course materials, we recommend you have access to a computer with a microphone and camera, and the internet. In some cases your instructor may use Zoom or other means requiring a camera and microphone to invigilate exams. If proctoring software will be used, this will be confirmed in the first week of class.
