CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Designed to expand on the theoretical foundations provided in EDUC 464 engaging students in the critical analysis of programming for early learners by surveying a variety of program types and providing both an overview of content areas for further discussion and inquiry specific to curriculum and instruction.

COURSE DETAILS:

This is an online and asynchronous distance education course.


In this course, students will engage in analysing the practice of teaching in an Early Childhood setting, and critically engage with the theories that justify their teaching practice. Students will have an opportunity to reflect on some of their assumptions and beliefs about childhood, learning, and teaching. This course will be of interest to individuals who currently work or plan to work and interact with young children in a variety of capacities including—but not limited to—teachers, parents, and childcare workers.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

The broad goals of the course are to facilitate an ability to:

  • Explain the prominent theories and foundational ideas in Early Childhood Education
  • Articulate your own developing philosophy of Early Childhood Education
  • Consider the practices of the teacher in an Early Childhood setting
  • Justify your practices with sound reasoning and theory
  • Reflect on your own beliefs and assumptions and adjust these beliefs when appropriate
  • Develop curriculum materials that cohere with your carefully-justified philosophy of education
  • Develop a learning environment that coheres with your carefully-justified philosophy of education

  • Online Group Activities 10%
  • Learning Logs 30%
  • Research Project 35%
  • Final exam 25%

NOTES:

This course does not have a Midterm exam. There is a Final exam, which is a Take-Home exam.

REQUIREMENTS:

Each week, there will be an assigned online group activity with the group members. Participation is mandatory in all group activities.
