Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Acquaints the student with the major issues in contemporary psychology and considers the historical antecedents. Special attention is given to questions of methodology and research design in psychology. Topics in physiological psychology, perception, learning and motivation are considered. Breadth-Social Sciences.

COURSE DETAILS:

This foundational course will familiarize students with foundational concepts and basic research methods used in psychology. The assignments are application based such that students will be using research methods to test key concepts from three specific chapters.

Topics:
In this course, we will examine topics such as the history of psychology, research methods, the biological basis of behaviour and cognition, sensation and perception, learning, consciousness, memory, and emotion.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

1. Familiarize students with the general foundational theories, concepts and research methods in psychology.
2. The application of basic concepts to see how they may apply to everyday life.
3. Gain familiarity of basic research methods and to practice applying such methods.

Grading

  • Research Participation: 6%
  • Writing Assignments: 30%
  • Mid-Term Exams (4 x 16% each): 64%

NOTES:

This course has 4 exams (16% x4= 64% of total grade), each comprised of two chapters. There is no final exam in exam period and an iclicker is not required. Research participation is worth 6% of the total grade. There are three application assignments (10% X 3= 30% of the total grade). In order to pass this course all assessments, including RPS or an alternative, must be completed.

REQUIRED READING:

Textbook: Psychology Around Us. (2022). Ogden, Boyes, Field, Comer, and Gould. Canadian 4th edition. Since assignments are textbook based and require accurate within-text citations this edition of the textbook is mandatory. Please DO NOT use any other edition of the textbook.
