CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Examines the methods, concepts and statistical procedures central to quantitative sociological research. Emphasizing the meaningful application of statistical analysis to social issues, the course provides intermediate quantitative research skills. Students use statistics software to conduct applicable statistical analyses and interpret results. Quantitative.

COURSE DETAILS:

Students will blend classroom knowledge of statistics with "real life" analysis of data to develop practical research analysis skills, deductive thinking, and dataset management. The course will build students’ understanding of descriptive and inferential statistical techniques as well as how to apply these tools in analytical ways. A review of statistical fundamentals, working in SPSS and hypothesis testing is central to the course. The focus is on the research enterprise of social science, rather than the mathematics, of statistics.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

In this course you will…

• Learn appropriate techniques of statistical analysis and how to present your results.

• Further develop critical and creative thinking skills associated with (deductive) research.

• Refine your understanding of basic descriptive and inferential statistical techniques and learn how to apply these tools in analytical ways.

• Further develop your SPSS skills.

• Learn what is needed to manage a data set—understanding what a data set is, how a data set is organized, where the data comes from, and how to find and use supporting documentation (codebooks, source questionnaires).

NOTES:

Course Structure

• For Summer 2023, the course is being taught entirely online. Each asynchronous module is organized into two parts: 1) lecture videos and assigned readings and 2) tutorial videos on software applications (SPSS) and assigned practice questions.

• To do well in the course you need both parts of each module. Part one is theoretical and introduces you to concepts and modelling and part two is the application of concepts. Expect to spend, on average, 4 hours a week completing course work.

• The following elements will make up the course structure: weekly online lecture videos, required readings, SPSS demo videos, practice questions based on the text chapters, two term assignments and two mid-terms.

• Some of the same concepts and applications are repeated from SA 257 and then added to throughout the course. New topics include data set management, elaboration models, weighting data, ANOVA Post Hoc tests, and multivariate regression.

• Weekly modules will be available on Wednesdays at 9 am. Most practice questions will be due the following week. Check assignments for due dates.


Grading
: Where a final exam is scheduled and the student does not write the exam or withdraw from the course before the deadline date, an N grade will be assigned. Unless otherwise specified on the course syllabus, all graded assignments for this course must be completed for a final grade other than N to be assigned. An N is considered as an F for the purposes of scholastic standing.

Grading System: The Undergraduate Course Grading System is as follows:

MATERIALS + SUPPLIES:

The IBM SPSS Statistics software program (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences), the Base Grad Pack 27 for Mac/Windows version will be used in this course.
