Special Topics: Approaches & Issues in Additional Language Instruction (5)

The purpose of this course is to provide an opportunity to explore major trends and issues in second/foreign/additional language education theory and practice. Through readings, class discussions and presentations, we will focus on current understandings of different aspects of language instruction and debatable issues prominent in language teaching research. Students will also consider these questions in relation to educational contexts (and additional languages) they are familiar with.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

  • Develop an understanding of methodological trends in second/foreign/additional language instruction including the teaching of language skills, curriculum, assessment, and use of technology.
  • Develop an understanding of prominent current issues and debates in language teaching scholarship.
  • Develop an awareness of and analyze critically the broader sociopolitical aspects of additional language education in global contexts.

  • Written responses to course readings 15%
  • Small group discussion facilitations on course readings 20%
  • Small group presentation on a reading 15%
  • Final paper 35%
  • Active participation in class activities 15%
