Overview
The comprehensive exam is the culminating component of the 4 semesters MEd journey in the TLGC graduate program. The name “comprehensive exam” is a bit of a misnomer. It is not an exam as such, but rather, more accurately, a demonstration of learning, an expression and presentation of significant understandings about education that students have developed through the program and that will have a profound effect on their thinking and practice as an educator.

Form
The comprehensive exam will consist of 3 parts details of which will be discussed in the first whole class session:

  1. a demonstration portfolio
  2. a written scholarly paper
  3. an oral presentation of the scholarly paper at the comps oral exam days

The comprehensive exam is graded on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis by 2 reviewers - the comprehensive exam supervisor and a 2nd reader. Students must receive marks of satisfactory from all readers on all parts of the examination to pass.

Suggested timeline
Sept. 10 – Whole class session
Sept. 24 – Whole class session
Oct. 8 – Whole class session
Oct. 22 – Whole class session
Oct. 16 – Comps Examination Form to be submitted to Trina by this date
Oct. 30 – Issue date
Oct. 30 – Nov. 13 – Independent work on components of comps exams
Nov. 13 – Due Date: Submission of written components (paper and portfolio) by 4:30 pm
Nov. 20/21 - Comps Days – oral component, students must be available on both days
Dec. 5 – Results date
Dec. 17 – Results date if revisions are required

Between Sept. 10 and Oct. 30, I will meet with each student individually at least twice to discuss their comps work. Keep Tuesday mornings as potential times for such meetings or we may meet at other mutually convenient times if necessary.
