Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

This course teaches the principles involved in the planning and execution of the synthesis of organic molecules. Emphasis is on synthesis of naturally occurring compounds of biological importance.

COURSE DETAILS:

This course teaches the principals involved in the planning and execution of the synthesis of organic molecules, and mechanistic insights into the stereocontrolled synthesis of complex molecules. Emphasis is on synthesis of naturally occurring compounds of biological importance.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

  1. Develop retrosynthetic thinking - Learn how to work backward from a target molecule to simpler starting materials. Analyze multiple possible synthetic routes to a molecule and choose efficient strategies.

  1. Understand modern synthetic methodology - Apply contemporary reactions, reagents, and synthetic techniques used in organic chemistry. Evaluate the strengths and limitations of different transformations.

  1. Plan multistep syntheses - Integrate individual organic reactions into complete synthetic sequences. Consider issues such as selectivity, protecting groups, yield, and efficiency. Understand how synthetic chemistry is used to access complex natural products.

  1. Apply strategic problem-solving in organic chemistry - Use mechanistic understanding and reaction knowledge to solve synthetic challenges.

Grading

  • Research Project/Presentation 25%
  • Midterm Examination 25%
  • Final Examination 50%
