Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Elementary French II is a carefully sequenced and highly interactive presentation of French language and culture in a media-rich course environment. To successfully take this course, students should be motivated with a sincere desire to learn about French language and francophone cultures, and be comfortable with computer technologies. This course continues on where FREN 101 left off to develop new pathways. Students with credit for FREN 122 may not take this course for further credit. Breadth-Humanities.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

 In this course you will learn how to express yourself in French in elementary conversational situations. A hallmark of the course is that you begin with a limited knowledge of French (around 50-60 hours), and at the end of the course you will be able to:

  • talk about past and recent events
  • read and talk about childhood memories
  • retell stories in the past
  • talk about your future
  • make comparisons
  • link sentences to avoid repetition
  • identify and name a variety of food products
  • order in a French restaurant
  • shop for food
  • ask for directions and talk about geography to explore travel destinations
  • learn about the lives of several historical figues in the French-speaking world
  • learn about Paris, the island of Guadeloupe and the Québécois and Francophone identities.

You will also be able to read short texts, understand elementary conversations, and write short paragraphs on these topics.

Grading

REQUIREMENTS:

In order to successfully complete this course, you must obtain at least 50% overall. The course grades are not curved, and you can find the grading scale on Canvas. The following chart shows how the final grade is determined:

  • Weekly Activities : 50%
  • 4 Quizzes: 30%
  • 4 Oral Assignments: 20%
