CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

A writing course to improve precision, organization and style when writing academically or creatively in French. Writing.

COURSE DETAILS:

This third-year language course at the advanced intermediate level (level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference) helps students expand and refine their written expression across a variety of genres – e.g. creative writing, argumentative essay, critical review, text summary, etc. within the broader context of francophone cultures.

The course combines original readings, formal instruction, group activities, individual practice and assessments. Students will complete both in class and at home writing assignments following an iterative process involving drafting, feedbacks, revision and reflection.

Through these activities, students will develop their mastery of genre-specific text structure, style and vocabulary in French. They will also learn how to use a variety of revision tools and strategies, including the use of French lexical resources, French writing support software such as Antidote and an ethical and critical use of AI -assisted tools.

Note that French will be used for all course activities and communications.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

This course prepares students to:

-Write coherent texts in French following the rules of organization and structuring appropriate to various written genres.

-Express ideas in French using complex grammatical structures, nuanced vocabulary, and appropriate transitional words.

-Revise their writing using the tools and techniques introduced in the course as well as the feedback they receive from the instructor and their peers.

-Express critical thinking on selected topics through text analysis and writing in French.

Grading

  • Preparation and participation in class activities 5%
  • Individual in-class assignment and revisions: Text summary (weeks 4-5) 25%
  • Group in-class assignment and revisions: Narrative text (weeks 7-10) 25%
  • Individual home assignment and revisions: Argumentative text (final version due week 12) 25%
  • Individual in-class assignment: Critical review (examination period) 20%
