CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Advances students from 200-level courses to a low-advanced proficiency, focusing on the integration of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Emphasis is placed on communicative competence, cultural literacy, and the use of authentic materials that reflect contemporary Spanish-speaking cultures. Students engage in discussions, projects, and activities that encourage critical thinking and practical language use across diverse situations. (B2.1 level of CEFR). Students with credit for SPAN 301 may not take this course for further credit.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Advances students from 200-level courses to a low-advanced proficiency, focusing on the integration
of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Emphasis is placed on communicative
competence, cultural literacy, and the use of authentic materials that reflect contemporary
Spanish-speaking cultures. Students engage in discussions, projects, and activities that encourage
critical thinking and practical language use across diverse situations. (B2.1 level of CEFR).
The following briefly details the two major components of this course: preparation and in-class
sessions.
• Independent learning & preparation activities. Students are responsible for completing assigned
readings, authentic audiovisual materials (podcasts, video clips, articles), Canvas discussion
forums, and Online grammar practice before each class session. These activities form the foundation
of in-class work and must be completed each week.
• In-class sessions. Students practice communicative activities, engage in debates and
discussions, analyze authentic texts, participate in writing workshops, and deliver oral
presentations. In-class activities build directly on the preparation completed during the week.
Active participation and consistent preparation are essential.
* Students should expect to spend approximately six weekly hours completing online preparation
activities, discussion forums, grammar practice, and assigned readings.

TUT-SESSION
Section 300-B101-TUT will be held on campus two hours once per week. Students wishing to take Span
300 must
therefore register in section B100 and B101-TUT.

Grading

  • Class participation: 20%
  • Canvas discussion forums: 15%
  • Oral presentation: 10%
  • Midterm exam: 15%
  • 2 Compositions 20%
  • Final Project: 20%

Materials

REQUIRED READING:

No required textbook. All course materials, including authentic readings, audiovisual resources, grammar guides, and writing workshops, are provided by the instructor and accessible through Canvas. Students will also use Smartclass for weekly grammar practice. Access to Smartclass will be provided during the first-class session (Week 1). There is no textbook purchase required for this course but there is an access license purchase for SmartClass.
