  • Prerequisites:

    CA 122 and declared dance major, extended minor, or permission from instructor. Corequisite: CA 124 must be taken concurrently.

Description

CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

Continues and expands on the work undertaken in CA 122. Emphasizes work in contemporary dance, ballet, and other movement techniques with attention to theoretical approaches to contemporary dance.

COURSE DETAILS:

This course is a continuation of CA 122, further delving into the fundamentals of contemporary approaches to movement, ballet and the Martha Graham technique, expanding on floor work, standing work and travelling exercises. The course will pay greater attention to detail inside these forms including an emphasis on musicality, somatic awarness, presence, improvisation and performative aspects of moving.

Each student is encouraged to:

-cultivate rigour and attention to the specificity of movement and qualitative shifts in sensation

-engage in deep listening, while also developing a practice of verbally articulating the work at hand

-work simultaneously to make space and take space

  • Mechanics 30%
  • Presence and Performance 30%

NOTES:

Work Habits 40%: Daily commitment to the working process and a engaged and progressive approach to practice.

Mechanics 30%: Physical understanding of functional alignment and movement principles covered in class.

Presence and Performance 30%: Your commitment, focus and awareness while in practice. The practical integration of

performance concepts proposed in the class.

Materials

MATERIALS + SUPPLIES:

Materials and Supplies:

• Form-fitting dancewear/athletic wear: Leggings, tights, leotards, unitards. Shorts are not recommended due to risk of floor burn.
• Form-fitting long-sleeved shirt/zip-up, socks to keep warm.
• Notebook and pen/method for recording notes when necessary.
• No jewellery that can catch or cause injury.
• Kneepads (if required for knee work)
