CALENDAR DESCRIPTION:

The study of selected topics in French Applied Linguistics. The course may be developed around one or a combination of areas such as Computer-mediated-communication, language pathology, language socialization, translation, error analysis, language in contexts, language planning. This course may be repeated once for credit if the topic is different.

COURSE DETAILS:

Special Topic: AI and Language Acquisition

This course examines the relationship between applied linguistics, language acquisition, and artificial intelligence tools.

Through concrete examples such as machine translation systems, chatbots, learning platforms, and speech recognition technologies, students will explore how AI influences language comprehension, production, and assessment mainly in a language-acquisition perspective. The course also encourages critical reflection on the limitations, biases, and ethical implications of integrating AI into language acquisition.

COURSE-LEVEL EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain how key concepts in applied linguistics relate to artificial intelligence applications used in second-language acquisition. 

  2. Critically evaluate the pedagogical potential, accuracy, and limitations of AI-based tools such as translators, chatbots, and speech recognition systems through the analysis of specific studies. 

  3. Analyze linguistic data generated or processed by AI systems to identify how these technologies model comprehension, production, and interaction.

  4. Discuss ethical and social implications of AI in language education, including issues of bias, privacy, and the role of human as learners.
