Draw the phrase marker for the following sentences, and include subindexing. Use triangles for relative clauses:

(1)   John put the book on the table on the first day of spring.

(2)   Mary sat down on a chair.

(3)   The cup of coffee on the table is for John.

(Note: sit down is a phrasal verb: [V [V sit ] [P down ]].

Problem II

The following sentence is ambiguous. Draw two structures to resolve the ambiguity:

John wrote a letter on the table.

Cite the specific rules (P-Rules) that is violated in the following sentence:

(4)     ?*They talked in his room about his grades.

(5)     *Horatio relies for money on his family.

Assume the grammaticality judgments here.
