1. Draw a tree diagram showing the derivation of
- a) If Mary does not wash the dishes, John will respect her.
- Note: [+Neg] is [-Strong] the default. If not marked as [+Strong], assume it is [-Strong].
- Note: [+Cond] in the 1st one a) is marked here as [+Strong]. This is correct--it means that it has to be spelled out at the tail (if). It does not need a host.
- Note: In the following diagram, M is marked as [-Irreal]. This is incorrect. It sould be [+Irreal].

- b) Has John not been being shaved by the barber?
- Note: There is a barrier at T, which blocks copying the features of person to the main verb. Without these features T cannot be spelled out at V. Hence, the dummy verb is inserted to host T and person.

- You may abbreviate NPs in (1a & b), except, do indicate and mark the Case featurs, since it is relevant to the exercise. Be sure to indicate agreement Be sure to include any links that may occur. Draw or indicate each step indicating which rule has been applied. In (1a) draw a complete diagram (except for the NPs) of the embedded sentence only.
- Delete: Start by letting VP dominate the main matrix verb plus MP (CP)/ VP.
