1. Draw a tree diagram showing the derivation of
- a) Has John not been being shaved by the barber?
- You may abbreviate NPs in (1a), except do indicate and mark Case, since it is relevant to the exercise. Be sure to indicate agreement, filling NIL features. Be sure to include any links that may occur. Draw or indicate each step indicating which rule has been applied.
2. This is the second exercise designed to test your ability to solve problems. You now have enough tools at hand to solve the following problem. It is important that you do these, as there will be at least one of these on the final exam.
Compare the following VP and its related NP:
1. The men did wash the car.2. The men washed the car.
3. The men have washed the car.
4. The men have washed the car.
5. Did the men wash the car.
6. Did the men wash the car.
(and so forth)
The underscored words represent emphatic stress. The task here is to add to our grammar an account of emphasis. Specifically, generate sentences number 1 and 6. Hint:
emphasis is a targeting operator.
Don't forget to account for emphatic stress.
