Exercise No. 5

#I:

Draw by hand the structures for

  1. eats an apple

The minimum number of links acceptable are T to V, V to NP, D to Qu, and Qu to N. Also acceptable is V to N, though no information is passed on this line. The feature [-Def] must be copied from D to ONE, and [-Pl] from Qu to N. [+Past] needs a verbal hose; the strategy of feature copying (targeting) copies it to V. A value for the feature Def must be assigned to ONE. [-Def] is copied from D under terms of government (a gov. link); and a value for Pl must be assigned to N; [+Pl] is copied from Qu. The NP needs a value for Case; [-Nom] is copied from the verb to the NP.

  1. was writing a letter

The minimum number of links acceptable are T to Asp, Asp to V, V to NP, D to Qu, and Qu to N. [+Prog] is copied to the verb to satisfy the former's host requirements. The auxiliary verb BE is inserted to [+Past] to function as its host; [+Past] is linked to Asp, which determines the choice of the auxiliary verb.

  1. has read a book

The minimum number of links acceptable are T to R, R to V, V to NP, D to Qu, and Qu to N. [+Prog] is copied to the verb to satisfy the former's host requirements. The auxiliary verb HAVE is inserted to [+Past] to function as its host; [+Past] is linked to R, which determines the choice of the auxiliary verb.

  1. had been being shaved the man.

The minimum number of links acceptable are T to R, R to Asp, Asp to Vce, Vce to V, V to NP, D to Qu, and Qu to N. Also acceptable is V to N, though no information is passed on this line. The feature [+Def] must be copied from D to ONE, and [-Pl] from Qu to N. [+Prog] is copied to the verb to satisfy the former's host requirements. The auxiliary verb HAVE is inserted to [+Past] to function as its host; BE is inserted to [+Perf, which governs [+Prog] functioning as a host; BE inserted to [+Prog] which governs [+Pass].

Indicate the rules required to derive the above from their underlying logical structures. Draw out the full NP for #1. You may leave NP abbreviated for the remaining phrases.

#2

Download the current version of the computer program (from the same site). Generate the following forms:

  1. cook the two geese (active)
  2. (be) cooked the goose (passive)
  3. chase several mice (active)
  4. (be) chased this mouse (passive)

Note: the auxiliary verb can't be generated yet.
