Answer Sheet

Exercise No. 5

#I:

Draw by hand the structures for

(1)   eat an apple

Note: all forms here are governors [+G].

(2)   be writing a letter

(3)   have read a book

(4)   have been being shaved the man.

Note: HAVE is adjoined to T, and T has not been introduced at the time of this exercise.

Indicate the rules required to derive the above from their underlying logical structures. Draw out the full NP for #1. You may leave NP abbreviated for the remaining phrases. Only number 4 will be marked for full credit but all of them must be drawn out.

1.   Links are drawn between each governor and each governee (only the relevant links need be shown here).

2.  A barrier is inserted blocking the coupling of the verb-Ca link to the preceding Vce-V link. This in effect blocks Case assignment since there is no government.

3.  [+Pass] is copied to and adjoined to V. V then splits.

4.
