1. Find and list five verbs that are ergative, five that are unaccusative, and five that are transitive with two arguments (both NPs).
2. Draw a tree diagram showing the derivation of
- a) The book is burning.
- b) A student went to the classroom.
- c) A prof hates syntax.
3. Which of the above are ergative, unaccusative, and/or transitive if any of the above?
- You may abbreviate NPs, except do indicate and mark Case, since it is relevant to the exercise. Be sure to indicate agreement, filling NIL features. Be sure to include any links that may occur. Draw or indicate each step indicating which rule has been applied.
