Ballistic Pendulum Demonstration
Description:
An arrow with a mass of 0.325 kg is shot at a target of mass 4.125 kg with putty in it. The target swings up after the collision as described
in the last lecture.
The values are:
$$m = 0.325 kg$$
$$M = 4.125 kg$$
$$L = 0.745 m$$
Evaluating
$$ v = d\sqrt{g/L}\left(1 + \frac{M}{m}\right) = (50{\rm~s^{-1}} )d$$
where $d$ is the distance the pendulum target moves forward.
The result of the demonstration was a value $d = 13$ cm giving $v = 6.5$ m/s.
