A new light-based manipulation method for assembling electronic components

Synopsis
A group of researchers developed a method using an optical manipulation technique in a liquid environment and a freeze-drying technique to manipulate and assemble a pattern of tiny solder beads. After positioning the beads in their appropriate places, the liquid inside the device must be removed for further manufacturing purposes. Removing the liquid can lead to disruption of the assembled pattern. However, the researchers have developed a freeze-drying technique in which the liquid is gradually frozen and then the pressure is reduced to transform the frozen liquid directly to the gas phase. This freeze-drying technique will maintain the assembled pattern of solder beads. This new method offers a cost-effective way to mass produce electronic components for smartphones, computers and other devices.
