Can you describe your career journey since graduating from the MPP program?

If I were to sum up my career journey in one word, it would be unexpected. I currently work as the Manager of Industry Engagement and Strategic Partnerships for the BC Coast Pilots, a private company made up of marine pilots, skilled mariners that board large vessels so they move safely in Canadian waters.

Previously, I spent time at Transport Canada, in a more traditional Policy Analyst position in the Pacific Region before spending the last five years in progressive government relations positions at the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, focused more on advocacy, particularly in advancing the environmental assessment process of a major container terminal project.

As I look back, the School of Public Policy undoubtedly provided me with foundational tools to help me grow my career. I was able to apply the analytical and writing skills I learned in the program to a specific field, which ultimately has allowed me to become a trusted advisor and establish a strong network within the marine industry.

During your time in the MPP program, you completed your co-op with Transport Canada. How has that shaped your career path?

My co-op term at Transport Canada has proven to be a pivotal moment for me and my career. My co-op was in the Pacific Region’s Marine Safety Division, where I analyzed marine safety components of major LNG terminal projects on the West Coast. This experience gave me hard skills and knowledge of the legislative and regulatory environment in marine safety, but also gave me opportunities to showcase my writing, comprehension, and analytical skills.

Like many students, I completed my co-op after my first year, but was fortunate enough to be offered a part time position and stay on while in my second year of the program. This allowed for me to continue to grow and gain experience throughout the year, ultimately leading to a full time position once I graduated.

What aspects of the MPP program have proven to be valuable in your current role?

The MPP program taught me more than just analytical and critical thinking skills you will learn in the classroom—it taught me how to foster and maintain strong relationships. The program’s collaborative nature prepared me to approach complex issues or challenges collaboratively, which has proven to be effective in getting the work done.

This will be especially important in my current role, a new role within the company, where I will be focused on advancing the organization’s goals and priorities with government, as well as building relationships within our industry partners.

How do you build and maintain strategic partnerships in your industry?

Strategic partnerships are built on trust, mutual understanding, and a shared vision. I focus on open communication and consistency in delivering value. This includes understanding their priorities, aligning them with broader organizational goals, and ensuring regular touchpoints to maintain momentum. My experience in government relations taught me that partnerships thrive when both parties see tangible benefits and feel their perspectives are respected.

Do you have any tips for students on how to leverage their co-op experiences to build a lasting career?

Co-op placements are more than just a learning experience—they’re an opportunity to showcase your abilities, try new things, and build a network.

I found the co-op semester to be more about taking opportunities when they came, such as jumping in on a special project, shadowing a coworker that has an interesting job, or simply going for lunches and meeting new people. For myself, as well as many of my MPP colleagues, this was our first taste of the corporate world, and it comes at a time when you have the flexibility and opportunity to make it what you want.

It is important to be proactive in taking those opportunities as they come, even those outside your immediate scope, and focus on developing relationships with mentors and colleagues. Many of the professional connections I made during my co-op at Transport Canada have continued to shape my career. Approach your co-op with curiosity and a willingness to contribute meaningfully, and the benefits will extend far beyond the term itself.

Do you have any words of encouragement or advice for students currently in the MPP program?

The MPP program offers a unique opportunity to develop not only technical expertise but also the soft skills essential for success. Embrace the challenges, seek out diverse perspectives, and focus on building relationships with peers, faculty, and professionals in the field. Remember, the ability to foster meaningful connections can be just as critical as your analytical skills. Trust in the process and be open to where it may lead you—the opportunities are vast if you remain curious and engaged.
