Petter's Perspective: Notes from the President
Welcome to an exciting new semester!
Welcome to the start of a new academic year at Simon Fraser University. I hope you had a great summer and are ready to take part in a productive and exciting fall semester.
If you are one of over 5000 new students or 60 new faculty members – welcome. We are excited to have you as part of our university community.
SFU is not only ranked Canada’s top comprehensive university, we are also Canada’s “engaged university” offering a multitude of innovative academic programs, cutting-edge research opportunities and hands-on learning experiences.
Thanks to our remarkable faculty members, we consistently place in Canada’s top tier for research impact, and are a leader in research mobilization, social innovation and community engagement. We are also proud of our commitments to Indigenous peoples and to the vital process of reconciliation.
I encourage new students to take part in Welcome Day activities and to discover everything SFU has to offer. We’ve also planned a Month of Welcome from September 3 to 28 that is open to all students – with free food, music and activities at our three campuses. Your welcome leaders, together with staff and faculty, are here to help you make the most of your time here.
Whether you are new or returning to SFU, I look forward to seeing you at welcome events this week, and at other university activities throughout the year.
I’m excited by what lies ahead as we continue to make progress in our mission to be Canada’s most community-engaged research university.
Have a great semester!
