President’s Statement on shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand

March 15, 2019

In light of yesterday’s horrific violence in Christchurch, New Zealand, I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to the victims, their families and to Muslim communities.

These events remind us of the need to counter intolerance and hatred in all its forms, here at home and around the world. At SFU, it is crucial that we redouble our efforts to oppose nativism and xenophobia, and foster a respectful and supportive environment for all members of our community.

In addition to standing in solidarity with all those condemning this tragic event in New Zealand, we must continue to work together every day to build a society that celebrates diversity and is free of prejudice and hate.
