Knowledge of community and environmental planning issues (transportation, housing, climate change, food and agriculture, placemaking) demonstrated by equivalent combination of experience and academic work sufficient to interpret the course material.

REM 200 Introduction to Resource and Environmental Management in Canada – 1-2 TA positions (4.17 BU + 3.17 BU, pending enrollment)

Qualifications:
Strong background in a relevant discipline with a strong background in sustainable resource management theory. Should be familiar with commons problems, the Canadian economy, as well as environmental challenges in energy, industry and urban development in Canada, and institutional and legal issues pertaining to Canada's environment, including those relevant to First Nations.

REM 207 Indigenous Peoples and Resource Management – 1 TA position (4.17 BU)

Qualifications: 
Some previous coursework in Indigenous studies is a benefit, and a keen critical interest in Indigenous-Settler relations in Canada, reconciliation, and environmental issues.

REM 221 Systems Thinking and the Environment – 1 TA position (7.17 BU, pending enrollment)
Location: Burnaby Campus (In person)
Duration: January 3 to April 28, 2023
Instructor: Brett van Poorten
Qualifications:
Knowledge of concepts associated with systems thinking (e.g. stocks, flows, feedbacks) as applied to environmental and social systems, and awareness of how these concepts have been used to build complex environmental constructs, such as resilience and panarchy. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated application of skills through modelling. Experience with R and a systems software such as InsightMaker or Vensim an asset.  

REM 311 Applied Ecology – 1 TA position (4.17 BU)

Qualifications:
Knowledge of applied ecology (including problems at the population, community, and ecosystem levels of organization) demonstrated by equivalent combination of experience and academic work sufficient to interpret the course material. Experience with R is an asset.

Knowledge of environmental law in British Columbia; a strong background in sustainable resource management theory, including public policy/planning, conflict resolution, urban challenge, institutional and legal issues demonstrated by equivalent combination of experience and academic work sufficient to interpret the course material.  

REM 350 Energy Management for a Sustainable Climate and Society – 1-2 TA positions (5.17BU + 4.17 BU, pending enrollment)

Qualifications:
Knowledge of multi-disciplinary approaches to sustainable energy (thermodynamics, resource endowments, technologies, economics, policies, politics, economic development, international diplomacy, and human psychology) as demonstrated by completion of REM 650 or equivalent combination of experience and academic work sufficient to interpret the course material.

REM 375 Ecology and Conservation of Coastal BC – 1 TA position (4.17 BU, pending enrollment)

Qualifications:
knowledge / experience of management issues of coastal BC; MATH 151 or 157, MATH 152 or 155, STAT 201, 203, or 301 an asset.

REM 412 Environmental Modeling – 1 TA position (3.17 BU pending enrolment)

Must have completed REM 612 or equivalent course, or have relevant experience in such courses as BICS 204, Math 151 or 157, Math 152 or 155, Math 310, Stat 101, 103, or 301

REM 495 Resource and Environmental Management Capstone – 1 TA position (2.17 BU marking support)
Location: Burnaby Campus (in person)
Duration: January 3 to April 28, 2023
Instructor: Anne Salomon
Qualifications:
Knowledge / background in resource management (including ecology, ecological economics, public policy/planning); experience with project and group work an asset; knowledge of REM classes an asset.

SD 281 Introduction to Sustainability – 1 TA position (5.17 BU)
Location: Burnaby Campus (in person)
Duration: January 3 to April 28, 2023
Instructor: Tammara Soma
Qualifications:
Knowledge of the following topics: challenges and opportunities for developing sustainable communities and a sustainable world, through the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); an understanding of strengths and weaknesses of conventional approaches to development and of sustainable development; emphasis on urban areas in the Global North and Global South; experience in leading tutorials and grading undergraduate courses; Background in Sustainable Development, Community Planning, and/or International Development preferred.

** Closing Date for all positions: Monday, November 7th at 4:00 pm

TAs/TMs must be available from start of term and until final grades have been submitted or last day of term.

Spring 2023 Term: January 4 – April 24, 2023
Spring 2023 Classes: January 4 – April 11, 2023
Spring 2023 Final Exam Period: April 13 – April 24, 2023
Statutory Holidays (no classes or exams): February 20, April 7 and April 10
TAs are expected to invigilate both midterm and final exams for their section.
TAs may be required to work on weekends during final exam grading to meet 96-hour (4 day) deadline.

TA Training
TAs should attend some Teaching Strategies for TAs/TMs workshops held by the SFU’s Centre for Educational Excellence.
