The SAS Component Object Model

SAS/AF software provides the SAS Component Object Model (SCOM), a framework for component developers who create objects in SAS/AF. SCOM makes it easy to develop plug-and-play components that adhere to simple communication rules, which in turn makes it easy to share information between components.

An SCOM component is a self-contained, reusable object that has a set of attributes and methods, a set of events that the object sends, a set of event handlers that execute in response to various events, and a set of supported and required interfaces. Component communication is available through

attribute linking, which enables a component to change one of its attributes when another attribute is changed.
model/view communication, which enables a viewer to communicate with a model, using a set of common methods that are defined in an interface.
drag and drop functionality, which enables information to be transferred from one component to another by defining "drag" attributes on one component and "drop" attributes on the other. SAS/AF software supports drag-and-drop interactions without additional programming.
event handling, which enables a component to send an event that another component can respond to by using an associated event handler.
