Joining the group

We are recruiting undergraduate, Masters, and PhD students. Interested students should email Prof. Schlomann with their CV and a brief statement of why they want to work with us. Please do not use AI. Prospective graduate students should plan on applying to programs in either Physics or Molecular Biology and Biochemistry.

We are an interdisciplinary group working to push the physics of living systems into new biological territory. This means that, by construction, no one has all the required skills prior to joining our lab. We welcome students of all backgrounds and value diverse scientific and personal perspectives. The most important qualities we look for are:

1. Adventurous spirit — being curious and willing to dive into new things that are outside of your comfort zone.
2. Humility — respectfully learning from whoever has the know-how, regardless of career stage, age, or background.
3. Responsibility — maintaining and sticking to schedules.

Some technical skills that are useful in our lab: microscopy/optics, hardware communication, fly genetics, sterile technique, dissection/fine motor skills, microfluidics/device fabrication, molecular biology/cloning, computer programming/image analysis, dynamical systems modeling, stochastic processes, writing, and illustration.
