Chemistry High School Outreach Programs

The chemistry workshops include activities that are designed to address the current BC Prescribed Learning Outcomes for chemistry including matter, its properties, physical and chemical changes, pure substances and mixtures (homogeneous and heterogeneous), separation processes, acids and bases, chemical reactions (including titrations), endothermic and exothermic reactions, etc.

There is an emphasis on green chemistry in the laboratory (water is the only solvent we use for student experiments) and we do not expose students to any potentially toxic materials.

This workshop will be held in a chemistry teaching lab.

States of Matter

How do states of matter change? What happens when they mix? Learn about polymers, which affect nearly every aspect of our lives. Then investigate some especially strange liquids that are as fun as they are fascinating!

This workshop is in partnership with Science in Action and is designed for students from K-12. Class minimum is 15, maximum is 30.

This workshop takes 90 minutes.

Crime Lab

Use different techniques from forensic science to solve a crime! See how forensic scientists use their knowledge of chemistry, botany, biology and psychology to piece together clues. It's important to be able to judge the value of data when deciding which clues matter most!

This workshop is in partnership with Science in Action and is designed for students from Grades 5-9. Class minimum is 15, maximum is 30.

This workshop takes 60 - 90 minutes.

Hydration Nation

Students will determine drinking water quality through testing the chemistry and physical properties of the main bodies of water on a newly discovered island and comparing results to the Canadian drinking water guidelines. Can be combined with Oil Spill.

This workshop is in partnership with Science in Action and is designed for students from Grades 4-9. Class minimum is 15, maximum is 30.

This workshop takes 60 - 90 minutes.
