Fundamentals of Hyperbaric Medicine

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this course is an Online Livestream Course.

This program is now being offered online, using the SFU Canvas system. All lectures are live with our faculty over Zoom, ensuring the course meets accreditation delivery standards. Upon registration students will receive more information on our online classroom system called Canvas.

Course Objective:

Students shall be able to describe the philosophies of the physics, physiology, pathophysiology and the medical aspects of compressing patients and observers within the hyperbaric environment ensuring safe treatment protocol. Students will be able to recognize diving accidents and gain knowledge, performance and competence to safely and efficiently evaluate and medically treat divers, which in turn improves overall patient outcomes and decreases the professional practice gaps.

Course Accreditation:

The Fundamentals of Hyperbaric Medicine has been reviewed and approved as a UHMS Designated Introductory Course in Hyperbaric Medicine by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS). Qualified students will receive 40-hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
The FHM course has also been reviewed and accepted as an Approved Hyperbaric Medicine Training Course by the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine Technology (NBDHMT). This allows eligible students to sit the CHT exam after required internships.

Who Should Attend:

There are no pre-requisites for attending the FHM course. However, it is recommended for doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists and chamber operators who are either already working in, or transitioning to clinical hyperbarics. Any certified Hyperbaric Chamber Operator is also eligible to certify as a Hyperbaric Medical Technologist after completion of this course.
