Inspiring Careers Panel

You're invited to a panel discussion with three Inspiring Alumni from the departments of Physics, Mathematics, and Earth Sciences. This event will address how these alumni reached the heights of their careers, and kept innovation at the forefront of their industries.

The Inspiring Careers Panel is hosted by Dean of Science, Dr. Claire Cupples and its goal is to bring alumni back to campus to talk about how they have used their SFU Science degrees.

Panel speakers are alumni from Earth Sciences, Mathematics and Physics.

Earth Science: Danea Voormeij, is a registered professional exploration geologist with APEGBC (since 2007), a Fellow of the Society of Economic Geologists (since 2013) and principal consultant for Mynah Exploration Inc (since 2007).

  • Bio: Danae A. Voormeij, BSc (hon), MSc, PGeo is a Vancouver-based gold exploration geologist with more than a decade’s worth of field experience exploring for precious and base metals in remote and isolated regions of the world, including Mongolia, Suriname, Papua New Guinea, The Philippines, Madagascar, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Nicaragua. Ms Voormeij’s honours degree was obtained through SFU Earth Sciences and she holds a Master's Degree from UVic that was funded by the BC Ministry of Energy and Mines. She has published extensively between 2001 and 2004 and presented her thesis at several international conferences. After receiving her professional (PGeo) designation with APEGBC in 2007, Ms Voormeij incorporated Mynah Exploration as a consulting firm to the gold exploration industry. In 2011, Ms. Voormeij successfully led her exploration field team to the grassroots discovery of 2.4 million ounces of gold (at 1.5 g/t Au grade) at Tuzon in Liberia, West Africa. By 2013, the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) awarded her with Fellow status. In 2014 she launched a university-accredited, online course that she developed for Infomine, which is geared towards exploration geologists titled “Gold Exploration in Tropical Landscapes”. She has been called “Queen of the Jungle” and has recently accepted the role of Exploration Manager for Alexander Nubia Inc to conduct gold exploration in the Eastern Desert of Egypt.

Mathematics: Mirjana Maras, Strategic Technology Professional at BC Hydro

  • Bio: Mirjana Maras works as a data scientist and business analyst at the Smart Metering and Infrastructure project, BC Hydro. She attended Simon Fraser University and was awarded the Bachelor of Science degree (First Class Honours) in Applied Mathematics in 2007 and a Master’s degree in the same field in 2009. Her past experience includes computational fluid dynamics modeling of tidal turbines at a Vancouver start-up company, Blue Energy Canada. She is passionate about education and people reaching their true potential

Physics: Dusan Mihic, Partner Enablement Manager at SAP

  • Bio: Dusan Mihic is the Partner Enablement Manager for SAP and is responsible for the on boarding and enablement of SAP reseller partners. Primary responsibilities include coaching and mentoring the partner Sales and Presales force. This includes one-on-one sessions as well as participation and facilitation of virtual and live workshops. The Partner Enablement Manager plays a key role in certifying SAP partner Sales and Presales individuals. Dusan completed his degree at SFU in 2004 with a BSc. of Science, Physics Major. Dusan was born and raised in Vancouver and started his career in back end IT with Intrawest as an Application Support Specialist. He later made a career turn into business, specifically into software sales in 2007 selling into the Small business space. He then moved to a Fortune 500 (SAP) to do software sales to other Fortune 500 companies and was promoted into his current role in 2012.
