SFU congratulates Dr. Glenda Gray

Simon Fraser University is pleased to acknowledge Dr. Glenda Gray’s appointment as president of the South African Medical Research Council (MRC) in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Dr. Gray received an honorary doctorate from SFU in 2012. A pediatrician, she is renowned worldwide for her pioneering work in preventing mother-to-child HIV transmission and her visionary leadership of the Perinatal HIV Research Unit in Soweto, one of Africa’s leading centres for the prevention and treatment of HIV.

Hailed as “one of the most influential and inspiring women in Africa”, she will be the first woman to lead the MRC.

In addition to her SFU award, she is the recipient of the Nelson Mandela Health and Human Rights Award for her outstanding work and dedication to the lives of women and children in Soweto.

She has published more than 200 scientific journal articles, is a National Research Foundation A-rated scientist, a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa and a member of the National Health Research Committee.
