Student convocation speakers

Each of the four convocation ceremonies, October 6-7, will feature a student speaker who will represent their peers and reflect on their SFU education.

Jeffin Vekkal, B.Sc. (Hons.)

Oct. 6, 9:45 a.m.

Jeffin Vekkal graduates with an honours degree in health sciences, with a concentration in life sciences. He was an executive member of the Canadianized Asian Club and a health sciences peer mentor. Vekkal is currently working as a project leader with the Fraser Health Authority and as a data analyst at SFU, where he conducts big-data research to understand how the immune system works. 

Fredrick Levi Wilson, BA

Oct. 6, 2:30 p.m.

Fredrick Levi Wilson is a member of the Gitga'at First Nation. A First Nations Studies graduand, he served on the First Nations Student Association board and as a peer cousin, mentoring first-year Aboriginal students. He will begin SFU’s teacher-education Professional Development Program next year.

Jessica Gutierrez, BBA

Oct. 7, 9:45 a.m.

Jessica Gutierrez is graduating from the Beedie School of Business with a human resources (HR) concentration. To complement her studies, she joined the Business Administration Student Society, taking on roles such as mentor, frosh leader, vp human resources, and president. Gutierrez now works in HR, and plans to explore a career path in learning and development.

Charly Caproff, B.Env.

Oct. 7, 2:30 p.m.

Charly Caproff was the first student accepted into SFU’s Bachelor of Environment program, and is the first to graduate with a major in environmental resource management. She founded the Environmental Resource Student Union and organized faculty events such as EnviroFrosh and Careers Night. Caproff was also active in the community, advocating for the protection of coastal karst ecosystems.
