SFU named a top family-friendly employer again
SFU once again ranks as one of Canada’s top family-friendly employers, taking home the honours for the twelfth consecutive year.
The university is one of just 20 employers recognized for offering progressive and forward-thinking programs to help employees balance work and family commitments.
The competition, organized by Mediacorp as part of the Canada's Top 100 Employers project, reviews a range of employment practices and policies. These include: maternity, parental and compassionate leave; daycare assistance; reproductive assistance, including fertility drugs and IVF; adoption assistance; paid personal- and earned-days-off (EDO) programs; flexible work arrangements; and even academic bursaries for employees' children.
This year’s competition organizers not only recognized SFU’s generous maternity and parental leave, but also singled out SFU because it is part of a unique urban development project, UniverCity. The project is designed to encourage sustainable lifestyles and improve the quality of life for employees and students who live there.
Sandi de Domenico, SFU’s associate vice-president, human resources, says the university’s three campuses make it easier for employees to commute from all parts of Metro Vancouver, allowing many of them to spend more time with their families for better work-life harmony.
“We often take it for granted, but with three campuses we are actually quite central to everything and that is so important for our many faculty and staff, especially those with young families,” she says.
“Being recognized as a family-friendly employer is a real win for SFU as it helps us attract and retain people in addition to helping create a real sense of community for employees.”
