On November 1, 2018, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) released a report that placed SFU as having the highest percentage of contract faculty appointments in Canada in 2016-17.

The numbers reported in the CCPA report for SFU do not align with our data. We have notified the CCPA of this and we are working with them to review SFU’s information in the report.  It seems that the data previously provided to the CCPA included categories of staff that are not faculty and did not include continuing faculty in non-tenure track appointments.  Our calculations for 2016/17 report the percentage of contract faculty at SFU at 28%, a number significantly lower than what is being reported. We are working with CCPA to ensure that they have the correct data for SFU.

Both contract and permanent faculty play an extremely important and valued role at SFU and enrich the educational experience we provide to students. The university always strives to find a balance between bringing in faculty on contracts and tenure track appointments.
