In early February construction work near the west end of the AQ (Academic Quadrangle) was particularly noisy. Our team at Facilities Services sincerely apologizes for the disruption. We heard you and we’ve adjusted the times for similar activities (e.g. concrete chipping and drilling) to occur outside of peak study, lecture and office hours. The Plaza Renewal project is the largest renewal project underway on the SFU Burnaby Campus and replaces waterproof membranes, plaza paving, seating and landscaping.

What’s next for the Plaza Renewal project?

  • In the vicinity of the AQ, work will continue until late 2019. The renovation of the main stairs between the AQ 4000 level and Freedom Square still requires extensive coring and concrete demolition.
  • As phases of the project are completed, the tented areas will shift across the AQ and Plaza. Pedestrian routes will continue to change and contractors will ensure that travel routes are safe.
  • In January, Plaza Renewal work also started on Convocation Mall. This work will extend to the fall of 2020, and includes the plazas that span across the Transportation Centre, and up to the east face of the West Mall Complex.

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding -- we know that construction can be disruptive to the campus community. If you have any feedback or questions, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact Project Manager James Bremner at james_bremner@sfu.ca.
