The following is a message from Andrew Petter, President and Vice-Chancellor at SFU.

Last month, I shared the news that VP, Advancement and Alumni Relations, Mike den Haan had decided to step down from his position effective March 31 to pursue a graduate education opportunity outside of B.C. starting this fall.

Mike has kindly agreed to serve as Special Advisor to the President, Principal Gifts, until the end of August in order to ensure stability during this time of transition. Meanwhile VP, External Relations, Joanne Curry has assumed the position of Acting VP, Advancement and Alumni Engagement while maintaining her current responsibilities.

I am therefore announcing the launch of a search process for SFU’s next VP, Advancement and Alumni Relations. A search committee will be formed in accordance with GP 29. Because my presidential term will end on August 31, president-designate Joy Johnson has agreed to serve as chair of this committee.

As the leader of a SFU’s advancement and alumni relations team, the VP, Advancement and Alumni Relations proactively engages with SFU champions, patrons and alumni to build support for SFU’s mission, vision and key priorities. Advancement and Alumni Engagement is committed to helping SFU donors advance new ideas that are furthering our communities—like addressing environmental concerns, providing lifelong value for students, and promoting social justice—and encourage investment in programs that are transforming the landscape of teaching and learning.

This is a key role for the university and I would encourage all eligible faculty and staff members to participate in the committee. And I invite the whole SFU community to participate in the consultation on the qualities, attributes and types of experience you feel the successful candidate should possess. This consultation will take place later this spring.

You will see more information about how you can participate in the coming weeks. Thank you in advance for your contributions to this important process.

Andrew Petter
