By Rosetta Cannata
SFU professor Andrew Gemino has been appointed as the dean, pro tem, for SFU’s Beedie School of Business, effective Sept. 28, 2020. Gemino will serve in this role until Aug. 31, 2021 while a search is conducted for a new dean.
A professor at SFU since 1998, Gemino has served as associate dean for graduate programs at SFU Beedie since 2017, and was previously associate dean of the undergraduate program.
“I am honoured to serve as SFU Beedie’s dean pro tem, though I wish the circumstances were different,” says Gemino. “I will work hard to honour our late dean Ali Dastmalchian’s memory and to realize his vision for the school. While the current pandemic presents challenges for our sector, there are also exciting opportunities and I look forward to working with our fantastic team of faculty and staff to help build an even stronger business school and university together.”
Gemino is an award-winning teacher whose academic research focuses on project management, business solutions design and business analytics. His research has received support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).
He co-authored an award winning introductory Canadian textbook, Experiencing MIS, and co-founded a software company that developed scheduling software and scouting systems for professional sports teams in the NHL and NBA.
“Gemino was selected for this role after consultation with academic administrators in SFU’s Beedie School of Business,” says Jonathan Driver, vice-president, academic and provost pro tem. “I have worked with Andrew over many years, and I am confident he will provide strong leadership for SFU Beedie.”
The process for selecting the next dean of SFU’s Beedie School of Business will soon be announced. It will include a search committee, elections and a consultation process with SFU Beedie and its supporters.
